Recording The New Album

Over the last few months, we've been recording our debut album for the band Love Creature. We are now in the mixing process. The vocals are always the most ardous part of the process. It's hard to get that take you want to live with forever. it's quite a commitment. Could it be better? ....maybe just one more take. Is the feeling there? Put it away and listen fresh in a few days. Is my voice in the right place? It's enough to drive anyone insane. There's more mixing coming up in a few days. Anyway, that's what I've been up to lately.

Utah becomes the first state to legalize gold and silver as currency.

Well as of this month, you can legally use gold and silver in Utah as currency. I'm not quite sure what to make of this. I doubt seriously I could walk into Wal-Mart and pay for my groceries with gold or silver. This just seems so wrought with complications, it's ridiculous. Craig Franco has already come up with an enterprising idea of a gold and silver depository where you deposit your gold and silver and he gives you a debit card that is backed by your deposit. I guess you would never really know how much is on your card without checking your balance daily as the price of silver and gold fluctuates. Well, good luck with that. There's a reason we have money. Though, I'm looking forward to requesting my employer to start paying me with a little velvet bag filled with ounces of gold. It is the law after all. right?

Concert @ The Red Coyote (Song: Slippery Road)

Shawn, Chuck and I went down to Virgin to play at the Red Coyote Cafe, and we had a blast. If you're ever heading out to Zion's National Park, you need to stop by, say hi to Jan, and try her chicken quesadilla (Delicious). Thanks to Jan Walker for having us out.

Thanks to everyone that came. The place was packed, and the crowd was terrific. It was great to meet all of you guys. We look forward to coming back again sometime.

Above is a short video snippet of the Red Coyote performance. Hope you enjoy it.

The Road Ahead

I don't know about you, but I've been trying to look down the economic road that this country has been on for the last four or five months and see exaclty what lies ahead for us economically and where I need to be standing in order not to get run over.

One of my main concerns is the value of the dollar and whether it will be ruined by hyper inflation as we print this money needed for the stimulus. Indeed, there are alot of radio talk show hosts with nothing but a high school diploma predicting the inevitable apocalypse from the events that have transpired over the last few months. But finally I heard one analyst that crystallized all this economic complexity in a way that makes sense to me: Walter Zimmermann from ICAP, Vice President of ICAP

A couple of quotes:

Trying to pick a bottom. People are going to want to wait and see, well, how far down is this going to go. And what deflation is really, it's a buyer's strike, say I'm not going to buy; I'm going to save. And the problem is that's what you need to get the basis for a recovery. Prices need to get cheap enough, again, to be affordable. And you don't get there by trying to prop up failing mortgages taken out by people who couldn't afford them in the first place. You need prices to become more affordable. However painful that is, that's going to happen whether the government tries to get in the way of it or not because that's the basis of a sustained recovery: Low prices and people have rebuilt their savings.

What I think is irresponsible is not being hopeful but encouraging people to spend when they really need to save, when the only way out of this is to get people to replenish their savings, rebuild their cash position. What brings an economy out of depression is not increasing spending and debt but lowering debt. Raising cash and letting prices fall back to levels that are affordable. That's the only real basis for a springboard up out of a severe economic contraction like is currently unfolding.

Essentially, he predicts continued deflation until 2012 until prices reflect a buying opportunity for those that have cash. This reset of the economy will then spur a recovery. He is not concerned about inflation, and if you do see it, it will be a sign that the recession is over and cash is starting to flood the market. But hyper inflation as seen in Germany before the war is very unlikely. He is saying "cash is king". Rebuild your cash position. Don't dump your 401K, but tell your 401K manager to roll it over within your 401K into a money market account (cash) and then roll it back into the market when it hits bottom (according to him). Though, I think I will continue to just dollar cost average. I think the market is probably close to its bottom at the moment, IMO.

Of course there will be pain as deflation continues, alot of it for people that are upside down in their homes, have alot of credit card debt and are out of work or under employed. This type of person represents the profile of millions and millions of people that are spurring deflation. The thing is, even people that should be spending are not letting go of their cash. If you have a good secure job, have at least a years worth of savings, have no credit card debt, you should be spending as has always been the case even before this economic event.

I'll never forget what Warren Buffet said, and I try to remember it as an unsophisticated investor. If everyone is running away from the market, he runs to it. If everyone is buying real estate, it's a signal to him to get out of it. If you follow the herd, you lose every time and miss out on opportunities.

Anyway, this kind of cleared alot of things up for me. Hope this has helped anyone that was as confused as I am about the economy.

The Power of Pomegranite

We're a little slow on the uptake in our house, but we finally discovered the joy of pomegranite seeds. They're very juicy, sweet and yet crunchy. I think they'll become a staple in our kitchen.

Pomegranites are rich in antioxidants, polyphenols, and phytochemicals. They do everything from helping to reduce heart disease risk factors, reduce systolic blood pressure, inhibit viral infections, and may even have anti bacterial effects against dental plaque. But they can be a real pain sometimes getting to each litte seed to eat. Well, I have learned a trick that really works, so you can have your pomegranite and eat it too! Just slice it in half and invert the pomegranite over a bowl of cold water. Pull the seeds and white fleshy part all out and loosely separate. The seeds will sink to the bottom, and the white fleshy part will float to the top. Skim off the top and strain. You've got a delicious treat!

Congratulations President Elect Obama

Wow, we have a President Obama. No matter how you voted, it would be difficult to deny the positive psychological effect of last night's election. America is not the same place today that it was yesterday.

I can only think of two presidents that have accomplished so much on the very day of their election, meaning the country was different the day after their election than it was the day before just by the virtue of them being elected. The first example is the election of George Washington. The very act of electing Washington signified to the world that the United States was a sovereign country. The second president whose election redefined the country on election day is of course Barack Obama. The election of Barack Obama makes official what most of us already knew; that in this country an individual can reach to the loftiest of heights regardless of race. This is a powerful idea that can't help but permeate the parts of our culture that percieve a glass ceiling as to how far they can go in this country.

The 08 presidential election of Obama gives new meaning to this sentence in the preamble of our Declaration of Independence: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal. Though this has always been a truth, it hasn't always been self evident in this country. It was nice to see that yesterday we as a majority of this country actually believe it. It will be interesting to see how the effects of this election will ripple throughout our culture for the next four years as well as the rest of the world.

It's also interesting to note that Obama handily won Virginia that just over a century ago was headquarters to the confederacy that fought so hard to maintain the principles of slavery. The photograph I saw of a front yard in the south flying the stars and bars of the confederacy as well as hosting an Obama campaign sign right next to it says it all. We have come along way.

Concert @ The Cosmopolitan

....with 5 star chef Imi Kun

I had a blast last night playing at the Cosmopolitan. You really need to stop by if you're looking for one of the finest dining experiences in Southern Utah or anywhere else for that matter. Imi knows how to do it up right. It's easy to see how the Cosmopolitan has gained the reputation it has. The concert went great and thanks to everyone that came out. The place was packed.

The entree for the evening.

SUSWA & Cedar City Fall Concert Series

Thanks so much to everyone that showed up to this concert. I was really happy about how this went. Thanks to Richard Panessa from SUSWA for having us out. It was a great evening!

This past week has been really busy with both the SUSWA concert and the Cedar City Fall Concert Series. Thanks so much to Larry Baker for all he did in putting that together. It was great to get to hear Steve Swift Play again. It's been awhile.

In other news, there's alot of upheavel in the economy lately. Just remember if they decide to have a recession, just don't participate :-). Keep the money flowing. Buy and invest. Consumer confidence is everything. My two cents anyway.

Review of the SUSWA concert:

Karyn Whittemore was our featured performer and as the pro that she is, takes control of an audience from the first song with her sultry style, powerful voice, and song selections. Journeymen Chuck Triplett on bass and Shawn Owens (sssss) on drums fill out the trio nicely. No additional accompaniment is necessary as they provide a nice clean, clear sound that allow Karyn's lyrics to shine through.

Concert @ Iron County Fair

It was a fun concert at the Iron County Fair. It went really well as usual. This is kind of a goofy picture, but I kinda like it. It captures that county fair atmosphere anyway. Brian Huntsman filled in for Chuck on Bass. I'd like to thank him for that. He and Shawn played really well together. Chuck is in Bulgaria with the National Guard keeping us safe from the Bulgarians I guess. He will be back towards the end of the month.

There's a couple more shows coming up in September so check out the schedule (show button at the top of the page).

There should be more pics of this concert in my myspace blog.

This was a great concert. It really couldn't have gone better. I'd like to thank Michael Evenson from the Z-Arts Council and Julie and Max Gregoric from Sol Foods for having us out. They make a great blackened fish sandwich, Gyro and Tortellini pasta, excellent! Check Sol Foods out when you travel to Zion's National Park. The place was packed, and we sold all but a couple of CDs which is always nice. Shawn and Chuck make me look great as always. It was fun, fun, fun. We made lots of new friends. Thanks so much to everybody that came out!!
Concert @ Giant Steps

The concert went really well yesterday. It was great to meet some new friends as well at Brian Head's Summer Concert Series. Thanks to Chuck Triplett (Bass) and Shawn Owens (Drums), they were outstanding as usual. I'm fortunate to have some of the best players around to play with me.

Giant Steps is a mountain, and in the summer they use their ski lift to ferry mountain bikers and their bikes up the mountain. Clever idea for revenue enhancement for a ski lift in the summer.

In other news, I've finally got my You Tube channel up. It only has one video on it so far. We have plans to get a good video camera and do it up right. No, I'm not giving a date. It happens when it happens :-). The video that's up now is a student project from the SUU communications program. It was fun to help them and a learning experience for all involved.

Concert @ Jessie's Grill

I played at Jessie's Grill in Springdale (gateway to Zion's National Park) last night. I want to thank Cory & Jessie Nelson for inviting me out. I love this place. If you travel to Zion's Park, you must stop there on the way in. The food is excellent.

I hope to make it a regular gig. As you can see in the scenery behind me, Zion's National Park is a special place and that's not even technically the park area that people pay to see.

People ask me why I don't tour more. Springdale is the answer to that question. I would rather drive a short distance to one location that people from all over the world travel to than drive hundreds of miles to other locations to play to audiences. It's kind of my Branson.

The trauma is over.

We went away for four days on a trip to Tempe, Arizona and thought Koal would enjoy spending time on my mom's ranch instead of hanging out at home. That was a big mistake. I'm sure all cat owners already know this, but most cats don't like change ......ever. He spent the first couple days under their couch. He later escaped to the great outdoors and spent the remainder of the time trapped under the porch afraid to come out because of the dog. When we finally located him he was a few pounds lighter and wouldn't give me the time of day for an hour.

So, Koal is back at home as you can see and recovering nicely. He's gained back a couple of pounds after his 4 day "under the porch diet".

Jazzy Java Concert

This was a really fun concert. Thanks so much to Reid for having us out. This is one of the best equipped venues I've played at. It's great to have professional premium venues like Jazzy Java and The Grind in this area. Jazzy Java has some awesome gear. Everything sounded great, and the stage set up with lights couldn't be better. My sound guy was telling me that their lighting set up was all LEDs which I've never seen before. The stage lights put out no heat which makes a big difference to the performer ie; me.

Thanks so much Chuck Triplett (Bass) and Shawn Owens (Drums) for playing with me. They sounded awsome as usual and always make me look good.

There will be more pics of this concert on my myspace blog. I try to scatter different content everywhere. If anyone starts a myfacespacetubebook.com I'm going to flip. Enough already.

I'm a concert beta tester

For those of you not familiair with Cedar City, we have one of the best music scenes around, and this is just the start of making it even better.

From our Cedar City news:

"....The concert committee ran a trial program April 27 with the always charming local singer/songwriter Karyn Whittemore and attracted a couple of hundred music lovers to the free concert at Main Street Park's new gazebo. It is now planned for the series to start Monday evenings in the fall with a five week season."

I'll be performing as part of this series. You won't want to miss it as I'm "always charming." :-)

My Set List

Here's my set list I sent to my bass player. I put it in story form as a service/memory tool to help him remember, and now he thinks I'm just wierd. Some people don't appreciate anything.

1. You Were Meant For Me (easy warm up song)
2. Breathe
3. Catatonic
4. 1-2-3-4
5. Nervous Nut
6. Fabulous Day
7. Strong Enough
8. Kiss Me
9. Bitch
10. I Want Nothing From You
11. In Your Eyes
12. I Don't Own You
13. Come to My Window
14. Shelling Peanuts
15. I Won't Be Your Baby
16. Extraordinary
17. Falling Away
18. One of Us
19. Oh, Well
20. Everything's Changed
21. Giddy Kitty

Set list in story form:

I've always felt that you were meant for me. When your near and I can feel you breathe, I become catatonic. I count 1-2-3-4 like a nervous nut waiting for the fabulous day, wondering if you're strong enough to kiss me, bitch. But sometimes I feel like I want nothing from you. Cause when I look in your eyes, I realize that I don't own you. And I just want you to come to my window while I'm shelling peanuts so I can tell you I won't be your baby. Is it so extraordinary that I'm falling away? You were once one of us. Oh, well. Everything's Changed, and I feel like a giddy kitty.

You tell me which one is easier to remember. Oh well, I guess he could just tape it to the floor as usual.

The Great U.S. Rice Famine of 08

.........or otherwise known as the year that americans ate more rice than they ever have before. Seriously folks, I'm at home minding my own business and decide I'd like to make a nice curry dish. I go to the store to buy some rice, and the rice shelf is bare not just in Wal-Mart but in every other store.

Despite the experts saying there is no rice shortage in the U.S., people continue to hoard rice by the 20 lb bag. The funny thing is, I bet most of these people only rarely eat rice. Alot of people have bought more rice than they will ever be able to eat. How so many people can be influenced by the media is beyond me. The media speaks and causes a little apprehension and all the rice magically disappears from the shelves. I hope they find the guy on the national rice counsel that started this rumor.

Did you hear? There's a problem with the potato crop. A shortage is predicted by mid summer. .............Come on, admit it. I made you at least a little nervous. :-)

I've just been stimulated

I've just been stimulated by George's package and like many others out there, I wish it had been bigger and a little more stimulating. I haven't decided what to do with this economic stimulus yet. I certainly wouldn't want to save it as that would violate the whole principle of being stimulated.

I should probably go out and buy some kind of plastic and metal doodad that plugs into the wall and does something cool. I don't know what that would be yet but as we are americans, it is our duty to come up with something to desire and consume, consume, consume to save our economy and way of life.

They say this consumerism of wanting one thing after another that we really don't need started with the first introduction of the Sears and Roebuck catalog in the late 1800's. Before that people just kind of worked and met their housing/nutritional needs and existed day to day. What would that be like I wonder?
